New to For Yarn's Sake

Alpaca Chunky from Rowan

Alpaca Chunky is a beautiful, incredibly soft new yarn from Rowan. Similar to it’s little brother Lima, the rounded chain construction creates a yarn that’s light in weight yet warm and oh-so-comfortable to wear. Available in 4 natural colors – Dove, Sparrow, Wren, and Pigeon. Not to be missed, this chunky yarn is uber-soft in your hand – like knitting with a cloud.

My Grandmother’s Knitting

Book: My Grandmother's KnittingimageWhen most people think of their grandmother’s knitting, they might not immediately see the connection to a modern knitter’s life.
But in My Grandmother’s Knitting, Portland’s own Larissa Brown
shows us that nothing could be further from the truth.
Many of today’s hippest and most popular knitters found their passion for knitting under the tutelage of their grandmother
or another revered family member, and in this book,
they share stories and patterns inspired by
their memories and their gratitude.

imageThe 26 contributors to My Grandmother’s Knitting include such author greats as
Wendy Bernard (of the Custom Knits series), Teva Durham (Loop-d-Loop series),
Norah Gaughan (Knitting Nature), Joan McGowan-Michael (Knitting Lingerie Style),
and Leigh Radford (AlterKnits and One More Skein series),
as well as popular designers Jared Flood, Cookie A., Ysolda Teague, Anne Hanson,
Kay Gardiner, Kristin Spurkland, Judy Becker and Meg Swansen.

image

The first half of this book is devoted to short, heart-warming stories
about the family "roots" of popular knitting designers.
The remainder is devoted to designer knitting patterns "inspired by"
the designers' grandparents, parents, and their places of origin.
Without a doubt, dedicated knitters will enjoy reading about
the family backgrounds of their favorite creators.

Tatonka's Project of the Week

Edna Slouch Hat
Designed by Leigh Bradford

imageimageThis fabulous hat was inspired by the designer’s aunt Edna, who every year treated Leigh to a new striped stocking cap topped with a fluffy pom-pom; Ideal for the chilly Northwest. Leigh adds her own twist to this age-old classic, updating the cap with a touch of slouch. Knit on size 10 needles, you can whip one up lickity split, just in time for fall football games, cool school mornings at the bus stop, or just about anything you choose to do in the great outdoors.

Friday Knit-Along - September

image“There’s something timeless about sitting around with your fellow knitters and your works in progress. The warmth of a fire or a cup of tea, the clicking of needles, and the satisfaction of quiet talk - or no talk at all - has a completeness to it. Nothing more need be added.” - Larissa Brown

Join us every Friday from 4:30 to 6pm for a structured knit-along;
an organized event where knitters get together, all working on a common project.
Great fun, terrific company, and a sense of accomplishment.
Not to be missed!

imageimageOur September knit-along is well underway. We’ve chosen a lovely new sweater design from the Fall 2011 Interweave Knits magazine. Touted as one of the most popular new designs on Ravelry, Heather Zoppetti’s Dahlia Cardigan borrows doily construction techniques to pattern the intricate-looking flower motif that adorns the back. Sleeves put in like afterthought heels grow out of a simple rectangle for an easy layering piece with serious drape. A lightweight fingering weight yarn allows the long fronts to swing with attitude. A truly elegant sweater, with a really fun construction path. Come see the many colorful shades of fingering weight yarn our knitters have chosen. Better yet, let us help you choose the right yarn for your Dahlia Cardigan, grab a chair, and join the fun!

Materials:

Interweave Knits magazine, Fall 2011 edition
850-1500 yards fingering weight yarn
US 5 32” circular and double point needles

There’s no charge for our structured Knit-Along. Just bring yourself and an adventuresome attitude. Because this is an in-store, structured activity, we ask that materials used be purchased from For Yarn’s Sake. See you Friday!
