Another year to welcome in. And another word to live by. This year, it's 'Me.'
Several years ago, I gave up the notion of a New Year's resolution. For the usual reasons - made on January 1, broken by the end of the week. So instead, I adopted the practice of choosing a word that I'd aspire to live my life by. There's been 'Healthy', 'Happy', 'Simple', 'Peace,' and 'Grace.' Last year it was 'Finish,' which I feel fairly good about, having completed a couple sweaters, several pairs of socks, a couple shawls, baby sweaters, a pair of colorwork mitts, and many, many hats. Sooooo many things finished (and blocked) that I kinda feel at risk of losing my self-adorned title as a process rather than product knitter. Nah! I still am a sucker for a new pattern and trying a new technique or yarn, only to start, then abandon the new shiny thing to my pile of UFOs.
So what's this year gonna be? Well, it sort of encompasses all the prior words, but refocuses inward. This year, I'm going to take time for the care and keeping of me. What does that mean? Well, it means I'm going to try my darnedest to do something for myself every single day. Whether it's eat a carrot or take a walk (healthy?), knit (happy?), let something bothersome go by (Grace?), or snuggle up for a nap with my puppies (Peace?), I'm going to do something every single day that is in the care of moi. Over my many years' experiences, ups and downs, challenges and successes, I've learned the importance of taking care of myself - my physical well-being, emotional health, and just making myself feel good. While I'm very fortunate to have a plethora of wonderful people in my life who do indeed make my life awesome, in the end, we are all responsible for our own well-being. If we don't take care of ourselves, we're no good to those we cherish around us.
So 2020, here we go. Let the care and keeping of Anne begin. I will begin by laughing out loud as my granddaughter blows bubbles in a glass of milk. This is gonna be a fun year.
