My favorite sporting event of the year (whilst knitting)! Another Home Run Derby has come and gone. And boy oh boy, it was a doozie!
My two favorite hobbies combined - watching baseball while knitting. And last week's Homerun Dreby marked the highlight of the season, at least for me. The day before the All-Star match up (another great, fun event), the eight MLB players with the highest number of home runs so far this year compete in a tournament style competition, seeing who can hit the most balls over the fence in four minutes. They bring their kids to the field, some getting to take mitts to the outfield and catch balls that don't quite make it out. Its fun, fun, fun. A good-feeling game that makers me fall in love with baseball all over again. And of course, watching with pretty string in my hands.
This year's highlight came in the semi-final round. Two young guys tied it, then continued to battle through three tie-breakers. In the end, 20-year-old Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit one more run, moving on to the finals, only to lose to Pete Alonso, who gaciously donated a portion of his million dollar prize (that's right - a cool million for one night's play) to charity. All in all, a delightful Derby.
So if you like baseball, mark your July calendar for next year. And don't forget to have something in your hands to make the viewing all that much more enjoyable. Play ball!
