Introducing the Aal Ower Toorie - the keenly awaited Shetland Wool Week hat pattern, which is synonymous with the announcement of the annual festival's patron. The Shetland Guild of Spinners, Knitters, Weavers and Dyers has been named as the official patron for 2025. This prestigious accolade recognises the Guild’s dedication to preserving and promoting Shetland’s rich textile heritage. With over 70 members, the Guild plays an important role in keeping traditional Shetland skills, techniques, and patterns alive while passing them on to future generations.
This year’s hat, the Aal Ower Toorie was designed by Guild member, Rachel Hunter, and takes inspiration from a traditional vintage allover pattern from the 1930s - blending historical motifs with a contemporary aesthetic.
“The inspiration for the Aal Ower Toorie came from last autumn’s popular ‘Allover’ exhibition by Chris Morphet at the Shetland Museum. The exhibition photographs clearly depicted the strong design and vibrant colours of vintage Fair Isle knitwear and this is what we wanted to achieved in our hat. Building on the allover theme we replicated a 1930s pattern from the Guild publication, A Shetlander’s Fair Isle Graph Book, as the basis for our toorie. The hat features a diamond grid allover pattern. The name Aal Ower Toorie not only highlights the design’s continuous pattern but also pays tribute to our Guild members, who reside ‘aal ower’ Shetland.” Rachel Hunter
The Aal Ower Toorie is designed in three distinctive colorways using local Shetland yarn. Knit with Jamieson's of Shetland Spindrift, our kit makes up colorway 1 and emulates vintage Shetland colors. The kit includes eight balls of Spindrift (100% Real Shetland Wool, 2-ply, 25 grams / 115 yards); 1 each Moorit (108), Eesit (105), Sapphire (676), Daffodil (390), Madder (587), Natural White (104), Moss (147), and Nutmeg (1200). Pattern not included; available for purchase at www.shetlandwoolweek.com.
While not originally designed with Spindrift, we've figured out color equivalents for the other two color palettes. These are available to purchase as single balls HERE.
Colorway 2 (Kaleyard colors) - 1 ball each of Loganberry (1290), Scotch Broom (1160), Purple Haze (1270), Daffodil (390), Lipstick (575), Lemon (350), Pine Forest (292), and Eucalyptus (794) or Verdegris (772).
Colorway 3 (Neutrals) - 2 balls Shetland Black (101) or Black Ice (1341); 1 ball each Sholmit (103), Granite (122), Moorit (108), and White (304) or Natural White (104).
